Be A Leader

Beyond general membership, there are several ways to increase your involvement, develop as a leader, and assist in running our organization

 

General Board:

Our General Board coordinates, promotes, and executes the myriad of events that we host throughout the school year. The General Board consists of nine different positions: Director of Member Development, Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Marketing, Freshmen Liaison, Director of Social Impact, HEMM Co-Chairs, and BILB Co-Chairs.

Executive BOARD:

Our Executive Board finances, manages, and ensures that every event is compliant with the guidelines set by the Wharton Undergraduate Division. The Executive Board consists of six different positions: President, VP of Corporate Development, VP of Finance, VP of Internal Affairs, VP of External Affairs, and Director of Black Wharton Consulting.

Logistics Team

Freshman logistics Coordinator:

The Black Ivy League Business Conference, hosted by BW, brings nearly 200 high-achieving students from all eight Ivy League Universities to Penn's campus to further their professional development and engage with Black business leaders and sponsors. In your very first semester at Penn, you can join the team of individuals who help make BILBCon a success! Opt to join either the Logistics, Marketing, Speaker Acquisition, or Special Events committees as an FLC.

GALA Logistics Team Member:

Launched in 2009, the Galvanizing Adolescents towards a Legacy of Achievement Award reaffirms BWUA's institutional commitment to civic engagement and corporate social responsibility. Each year, the GALA Logistic Team plans a dinner that honors one local organization whose exemplary work supports, uplifts, and inspires members of our Philadelphia community.

Conference Committee

Conference Committee:

Every fall, the Black Wharton Undergraduate Association hosts two major conferences devoted to the professional development and excellence of future Black business leaders: The Howard E. Mitchell Memorial Conference (HEMM) & The Black Ivy League Business Conference (BILB). The success of these two events is completely dependent on the strength and devotion of our conference committees. Both conferences will be seeking to appoint the following chairs: Speaker Acquisition, Logistics, Marketing, and Special Events. Additionally, we appoint a School Liaison to coordinate cross-collaboration within the Ivy for the BILB Conference.

Black Wharton Consulting

APEX FELLOWSHIP:

Each semester, BWC hosts a cohort of 10-20 high-achieving students who applied to the consulting branch but were not selected, to be a part of the APEX Consultant Development Fellowship Program.

Through this program, BWC hosts weekly guided sessions to educate the fellows on topics like how to create effective workstreams, research best practices, and case interview preparation. All of these initiatives are hosted with two main goals in mind: ensuring that APEX Fellows have the skill sets necessary to excel in their internships despite not having hands-on consulting experience, and priming them to matriculate into the consulting branch one day if they choose to re-apply.

JUNIOR CONSULTANT:

BWC consultants work with local, black-owned businesses to develop innovative strategies and achieve growth. They offer expertise in areas such as marketing, operations, finance, and more. Upon successful completion of your first semester as a Junior Consultant, you are promoted to the role of Senior Consultant for the next semester.

PROJECT LEAD:

Project leads act as the direct liaison between clients and consultants. Leading teams of six consultants, they direct, design, and advise on the client case, while maintaining consistent communication with the BWC executive team.

When: Every Semester

MANAGER:

BWC Managers collaborate with Project Leads to provide subject-matter expertise and broaden the scope and understanding of their project. As tenured members of the consulting branch, they act as a form of quality control to ensure our clients are provided with the best possible results.

Consultant development chairs:

BWC Consultant Development Chairs are the heads of our APEX Consultant Development Fellowship program. Over the course of the semester, they hold weekly sessions covering topics that will help prepare our members for internships in consulting roles

Who Can Apply: BWC Project Leads, BWC Senior Consultants

When: Every semester or every other semester

Vice-Director(s):

Appointed by the BWC Director, the BWC Vice-Director(s) are responsible for assisting the Director in the completion of all tasks pertaining to the operation of Black Wharton Consulting’s branches. This role is extremely time-intensive, and includes (but is not limited to) the following tasks:

  1. Assisting in the management of the recruitment process at the start/end of each semester

  2. Auditing client presentations after manager revisions, and assisting in final edits where necessary

  3. Overseeing client acquisition efforts alongside the Director

  4. Supporting the Consultant Development Chair in the facilitation of the APEX program

social chair:

The social chair is tasked with the responsibilities of creating and facilitating internal and external social events for BWC members. In order to do so, this social chair must communicate their ideas for social events with the BWC board in a timely fashion, and lead the planning of these events.

Who Can Apply: BWC Consultants

Marketing chair:

The marketing chair’s primary role is to create marketing materials to help communicate BWC’s events, programming, and other measures. This will be done through social media (primarily Instagram), the website, and on the ground marketing events. They will also be responsible for leading the slide design committee in creating next semester’s slide deck.
